Crafting for the birds at Te Puke Intermediate

Written By Jaxon Drabble

At 10:50am on the TPI school grounds we started a 5 minute bird count. We spotted 8 sparrows, 2 mynas, 2 swallows, 6 blackbirds and 2 tui. We didn’t find any kereru for this years ‘Great Kereru Count’. Also today we got creative and made colorful nest material holders, geometrical shaped window protectors for the kereru and some sticky bird feeders. Our bird feeders are made using pine cones filled with animal fat and bird seeds. Using contact paper (duraseal) and flower petals we made our Kereru window protectors. Also to make the nest material holders we used plastic mesh and wool.
